Pro Wrestling Prom is Happening

I’ve seen a lot of things happen in a pro wrestling ring — blood, thumbtacks, marriages, death, a circus net made out of barbed wire — but I’ve never seen a prom. Well, that’s about to change, because Austin, Texas area independent pro wrestling promotion Anarchy Championship Wrestling is holding (to my knowledge) the very first professional wrestling prom. And there’s a good possibility blood will still be involved.

ACW’s “Nothing is as Real as a Dream” prom takes place on Sunday in the appropriately named “Mohawk,” an open-air bar in downtown Austin, and at the risk of sounding like a shill for my local wrestling company, I am pretty excited to wear a suit and watch guys try to kill each other for my amusement. It’ll be like a happier version of that Jennifer Connelly scene at the end of Requiem For A Dream. The bar is going to be decorated, prom photos will be taken (I’m not sure if that means pictures of us, pictures of the wrestlers, or pictures of us WITH wrestlers … although it would be pretty fun to pretend I went to prom with Portia Perez), and thanks to the bar not having a roof, it will literally be a “night under the stars.”

I’m going to be there, and I will report back on the happenings, pending I am not chased out by chair-wielding prom bullies. Also, please do not Google search “wrestling prom,” unless you want to come across some really disconcerting fetish videos.

[H/T to my own nerdy scheduling]
