Joseph Benavidez rolled into UFC on Fox 9 with a three-fight winning streak that dated back to his title fight with UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson at UFC 152, and the last two victories came on very convincing TKOs. If anything, Benavidez wanted to prove that not only was he the No. 1 contender to the Flyweight title, but he also deserved to be the man who would take it from Johnson. Because of that, we all expected tonight’s main event rematch between these two incredible fighters to be a long one, perhaps even going the distance.
What we got, well… was probably not what anyone watching expected. Spoilers ahead, because here are the UFC on Fox 9 results.
Main Event for the UFC Flyweight Championship
Demetrious Johnson def. Joseph Benavidez (KO, Round 1)
The only people who could have expected this were the men in Johnson’s corner and who have been training with him, because a first round KO for the Flyweight title? What planet are we on? The good news for all of us is that not only has Mighty Mouse added another level to his already great career, but we can all believe that Benavidez will come back just as hard to prove himself again.
Urijah Faber def. Michael McDonald (Guillotine choke, Round 2)
Another surprise, as a lot of us expected youth to overtake experience, but Faber proved that even at 34-years old, he can still be a badass in non-title fights. He’ll undoubtedly get another shot at the Bantamweight title once Dominick Cruz and Renan Barao determine who the real champ is, but will Faber be able to show up like he did tonight in a title fight? Probably not.
Chad Mendes def. Nik Lentz (Unanimous Decision)
Joe Lauzon def. Mac Danzig (Unanimous Decision)
Fox Sports 1 Preliminary
Ryan LaFlare def. Court McGee (Unanimous Decision)
Edson Barboza def. Danny Castillo (Majority Decision)
Bobby Green def. Pat Healy (Unanimous Decision)
Zach Makovsky def. Scott Jorgensen (Unanimous Decision)
Sam Stout def. Cody McKenzie (Unanimous Decision)
Abel Trujillo def. Roger Bowling (TKO, Round 2)
Alptekin Ozkilic def. Darren Uyenoyama (Split Decision)
My final grade for UFC on Fox 9 is a solid A. That was just a great night of good, consistent fights with only a little lull here or there, and ultimately with a very surprising and fantastic finish to the main events. As for the saddest part of the night, it would have to be poor Cody McKenzie and his shorts…
