South African runner Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to five years in a South African prison for his role in the death of Reeva Steenkamp. The ruling, handed down by Judge Thokozile Masipa, comes 20 months after Steenkamp’s death on Valentine’s Day and more than 7 months after the trial started.

Pistorius has repeatedly said the shooting was accidental. As a result, he was found guilty of culpable homicide as opposed to the more serious crime of first degree murder.

Pistorius is famous for being the first double-amputee sprinter to compete in both the Olympics and Paralympics. Experts believe he will only serve 10 months of his 5-year sentence. The remainder of his term would be under house arrest.
