A spokesperson for the family of former Blackhawks great Stan Mikita released a statement on Friday indicating the hockey legend is battling serious health issues after being diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia, a progressive disease similar to Alzheimer’s.

“The family of Chicago Blackhawks Ambassador and Hall of Fame player Stan Mikita has announced that Stan is facing some serious health issues. Stan has been diagnosed with suspected Lewy Body dementia, a progressive disease and is currently under the care of compassionate and understanding care givers.”

Drafted by the Blackhawks in 1959, Mikita, 74, played his entire 22-year career in Chicago, winning a Stanley Cup in 1961. He remains the franchise’s all-time leading scorer with 1,467 points and is 2nd in goals with 541.
