The Giant Baylor Lineman Who Scored A Touchdown In The Cotton Bowl Is Now Playing Tight End

The last time we heard from Baylor lineman LaQuan McGowan he had scored a touchdown in the Bears’ eventual 42-41 loss to Michigan State in the Cotton Bowl. Well the No. 80-wearing big-bodied, fleet-footed senior out of Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch High is back, and he is playing two new positions.

That’s right. A guy whose official profile starts off with the word “Enormous” and who is all the way up to 410 pounds is getting some more offensive work, and that means we may see more examples of this in the future from the father and son offensive genius of Art and Kendal Briles.

The Waco Tribune‘s John Werner did the dirty work on this story and grabbed some must-read quotes about McGowan, who played offensive and defensive line and also was his team’s placekicker in high school.

Via Werner:

“We’re looking at him as kind of a slot and tight end type of guy,” Baylor coach Art Briles said. “He can certainly help us in the run game in those situations. The way we’re looking at it is we’ve got three games in nonconference to kind of feel it out and see what he can do and teach him what to do in live action.”

Baylor quarterback Seth Russell likes throwing to McGowan because he has big, soft hands.

“His hands are about as big as my leg, so I can pretty much put it wherever, and he can snag it out of the air,” Russell said.

Bleacher Report’s Adam Kramer previously wrote a very good profile on McGowan, so it’s worth a read if you haven’t gotten to it already. But I’m just excited for more celebrations like the one McGowan showed when he scored in the Cotton Bowl.

If there’s one thing this crazy, mixed up world needs it’s more Fat Guy Skill Touchdowns.
