Chris Rock Thinks Floyd Mayweather’s Cockiness Might Come Back To Bite Him

The last few days have felt a bit like the late 80’s and early 90’s, with certain basketball games devolving into fighting and (possibly) dirty play, and more anticipation for a boxing match than the halcyon days of Mike Tyson (and for a man with a similar record of violence against women, no less).

Even if it seems like people are less excited about boxing and more excited about “being excited about boxing,” it does appeal to a nostalgic portion of my sports fandom to see intelligent, famous people weighing on a boxing match like back in the days of Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield. Chris Rock is an intelligent, famous person, and in what looks like the same Real Sports session for HBO that produced his eloquent monologue on baseball’s decline in black communities, Rock makes his choice for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight.

Once again, it’s a well-reasoned opinion befitting an informed fan like Rock. No big laughs, but I could listen to him talk sports all day. Who wouldn’t love to see him make First Take watchable? And he makes a point I haven’t heard much about Mayweather — a fighter with an ego as big as Floyd’s is not going to be undefeated forever. If you think you’re invincible, people will always try to prove you wrong, and eventually someone will. It might not be Pacquiao, but it might. Anyway, boxing is fun again – for now, at least.
