As we prepare for the “Fight of the Century,” let’s take a look at some things we may not know about the life and career of 36-year-old Manny Pacquiao.

The first man to beat Pacquiao in the ring allegedly killed someone in 2006.

On Feb. 9, 1996, Manny Pacquiao missed weight for his fight against Rustico Torrecampo. In an attempt to deliver a somewhat appropriate punishment, the Filipino boxing association made him wear weighted gloves for the fight that ultimately led to the first loss of Pacquiao’s career, a controversial knockout in the third round (if you watch closely, you can see head and shoulder contact).

Torrecampo had a mostly subpar career after that, losing four of his next seven fights. Ten years later, he was wanted in the murder of a garbage truck driver.

The only Filipino to beat boxing icon Manny Pacquiao as a pro is at large, wanted for the murder of garbage truck driver Ernesto Ongkit in Tondo two weeks ago.

Rustico Torrecampo, 35, stabbed Ongkit twice over a disagreement caused by a road accident. Ongkit, 54, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Tondo Medical Center early morning last Sept. 11.

Torrecampo is currently out on bail.

Manny ran away from home after his dad ate the family dog.

One of the wildest stories to come out this week involves Manny Pacquiao’s pet dog. When he was young, his family was poor, and his father often had trouble putting food on the table. Ultimately, the dog was sacrificed because everyone was hungry. Manny, of course, kinda flipped out (for obvious reasons). He left home and became a boxer two years later.

Pacquiao’s father is not a monster. His family was simply so poor that his father had to make the difficult decision of cooking the family pet so they could eat. After leaving home, Pacquiao lived on the streets and did things like selling donuts for a nickel more than they cost at the store in order to survive. He became a professional boxer at age 14.

He does not drink cold water because he thinks it’s unhealthy.

“When I was young, we didn’t have a refrigerator. Our family was poor, and we always drank regular water.”

He was drafted in the Filipino basketball league (PBA).

“And with the 10th pick in the 2014 PBA rookie draft, the Kia Sorento select… Manny Pacquiao?!” The 36-year-old boxer, who also owns the team, chose himself in the draft because he’s also the coach. Two rounds later, the Kia Sorento then selected Manny’s cousin, Rene Pacquiao. They like to keep it in the family.

He often put ball bearings and rocks in his trunk to make weight.

Early in his career, Manny had trouble making weight. In fact, there were times he resorted to blatant cheating.

Manny was very scrawny when he started in boxing. His trainers would always tell him that he was too short and light to be a boxer. So during weigh-ins, he would put rocks and steel ball bearings on his pockets to make it seem he was heavier.

This likely happened during Pacquiao’s time on the boxing show, Blow by Blow. As a light flyweight, he often hovered right around the 100-pound mark.

Manny Pacquiao starred in a movie about a plumber with superpowers.

That’s the trailer for the 2009 movie Wapakman, in which Pacquiao plays a superhero of some kind. It bombed in the box office.

Via Wiki:

The film was not well received by the public, and on the first day of opening landed last place in the box-office in the two-week Metro Manila Film Festival.[1] It was also one of two films (the other being Nobody, Nobody But… Juan starring Dolphy) to not win an award during the festival.

The full movie is available on YouTube.

Manny won a bidding war for a house in Beverly Hills after enticing the owner with tickets to his fight with Floyd Mayweather.

Because of his busy schedule and his constant back-and-forth between the Philippines and U.S., Pacquiao keeps a home in Southern California. He wanted to upgrade to a bigger place in Beverly Hills just last month, but he found himself bidding against other would-be-buyers.

So, Manny made the homeowners an offer they couldn’t refuse… tickets to his May 2 fight against Floyd Mayweather.

“No doubt it helped,” said Pacquiao’s realtor, Elsa Nelson, according to Rogers. “The sellers are great fans of boxing and of Manny, so it was a big deal.”

If nothing else, Manny got the home of his dreams out of this fight.
