Did ‘The Simpsons’ Predict The FIFA Scandal More Than A Year Ago?

On Tuesday night, the U.S. Department of Justice brought the hammer down on FIFA, the organization which governs association soccer, by arresting several of its members on racketeering and corruption charges. As news of the story was breaking throughout the day on Wednesday, many fans of The Simpsons couldn’t help but notice the similarities from a Season 25 episode titled, “You Don’t Have to Live Like a Referee,” which originally aired in March of 2014.

A FIFA executive visits Homer in the episode, seeking his assistance to stop widespread corruption by World Cup referees. Just as Homer accepts the request, the executive himself is arrested by police on charges of corruption.

FIFA has been a punching bag for critics for a while now, so it’s not surprising The Simpsons got this one (kinda) right more than a year ago.
