Former NFL Star Clinton Portis Is In A Whole Heap Of Trouble With The IRS

During his playing days, then-Washington running back Clinton Portis famously said during a radio interview, “Portis pockets straight” — his way of saying his finances are in good order, thank you. Sadly, that may no longer be the case, according to the Independent Florida Alligator, which reports that Portis is being sought for tax fraud by the IRS.

The 33-year-old failed to pay income taxes in 2006 totaling $401,432.18, and did the same in 2010 to the tune of $57,187.61. Additionally, he owes the MGM Grand in Vegas $287,178.56. According to my calculator, that’s a total of $745,798.35 that he owes.

But it gets worse. From Deadspin:

Portis avoided foreclosure on the Miami property last year by selling it and thus getting the lawsuit dismissed, but he’s still facing trouble with the bright purple house north of Gainesville, which we believe is the one he purchased for his mother. (Purple and white are GHS’s colors; Portis says the color reminds her of “royalty.”) Court documents reveal Portis has yet to answer to the bank’s complaint—records show a private investigator failed at all attempts to serve Portis with the foreclosure notice, though when contacted by the P.I. the former University of Miami star said he “had a lawyer,” but refused to give the attorney’s name.

Portis was a fan favorite during his career (lest we forget his many characters), so it’s upsetting to see him fall on such hard financial difficulties. Hopefully he gets some money out of the NFL for the head trauma he suffered while playing to help pay down his debts.
