In a letter addressed to the Mother Emanuel Hope Fund, Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson announced he would be making a donation of $100,000 to the victims of the Charleston, South Carolina shooting.
The donation is to be split among the nine victims’ family, with $10,000 going towards each family for “funeral costs other financial needs of each” while $10,000 goes towards the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Richardson, a native of Springs Hope, North Carolina has long stated his desire that the Panthers represent both of the Carolinas. And while the stadium is in Charlotte,the team holds its training camp at Richardson’s alma mater in South Carolina, Wofford College.

In honor of Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, Cynthia Hurd, Susie Jackson, Ethel Lance, DePayne Middleton-Doctor, The Reverend Clementa Pinckney, Tywanza Sanders, The Reverend Daniel L. Simmons, Sr. and Myra Thompson, please accept the enclosed check from the Carolina Panthers in the amount of $100,000 to provide $10,000 per family to help defray funeral costs, and other financial needs of each, and $10,000 for the church as a memorial honoring the victims. Our hearts are one with those who grieve the loss of these individuals.

When asked, the Panthers organization declined comment on the donation but added, “our hearts are one with those who grieve the loss of the individuals.” Those interested in making a contribution to the fund can do so here.
