This Might Be The First Time An Ump Has Gone After A Player

It’s not often that you see an umpire charge in the direction of a player to pick a fight, but that’s exactly what happened Thursday during the Cubs-Dodgers game. After Cubs pitcher Jon Lester walked a batter, he seemed visibly upset with either the call, himself, or both. Regardless of the reasoning, his actions did not sit kindly with home-plate umpire Andy Fletcher.

With Lester’s back turned, Fletcher began charging toward the mound, only to be held back by catcher David Ross. After the game, Lester was confused about the whole thing.

“I didn’t say anything directed at [Fletcher],” Lester said. “I don’t know why he was so upset. I had my head down when I was yelling. He went AWOL. I don’t know what was going on. It has nothing to do with umpire’s strike zone.”

According to Ross, Lester and Fletcher had a disagreement earlier in the season as well, so perhaps this was carryover from that. Either way, it’s not often you’ll see an umpire charging at a player.
