Today in not-so-surprising news: Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback C.J. Wilson has decided to “step away” from football following a fireworks accident earlier this month that resulted in the loss of two of his fingers.

The news was first reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. An NFL.com report later added, citing a source, that “it’s doubtful [Wilson will] be able to return to football.”

A statement from Wilson’s agents was obtained by The Sporting News:

“On behalf of C.J. Wilson, he has decided to step away from the NFL at this time to focus on his immediate needs in recovery which are the foundation of his long-term health. When C.J. is fully healed and able to return to the game. … We look forward to seeing him play again in the future.”

Wilson lost his index and middle fingers in the accident. The Bucs placed Wilson, who appeared in two games with the team last season, on their reserve/retired list. Wilson can theoretically be re-activated later if he passes a physical. Given that Wilson is now down two fingers, though, it’s safe to say his future in the NFL is very much in doubt.
