Let’s get this out of the way for people who aren’t familiar with Discovery’s Deadliest Catch. The show, which features the trials and tribulations of Alaskan crab fishermen, is in its 11th season. It has been nominated for several Emmy Awards, including cinematography, picture and sound editing. It remains one of Discovery’s most popular shows and at one time, drew several million viewers per episode. Because of the nature of the show and the amount of footage taken over several weeks at sea, episodes air months after the fact. This particular season, which features the 2014-2015 crab fishery, began in April.
All of that brings us to Tuesday night, as Deadliest Catch fishermen watched Super Bowl XLIX between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks. Now, it should be noted that several of these men call Seattle home, residing there year-round when not working the harsh winter in Alaska. Unsurprisingly, they had a strong rooting interest for this year’s game.
As several fishing vessels tuned in via satellite, the crew of the Northwestern was instead forced to get their play-by-play from a friend on the telephone. When the Seahawks made it to the goal line with :26 remaining, everyone rushed into the wheelhouse. They were all so happy. They all assumed Marshawn Lynch was getting the ball.
