The IndyCar community, and racing in general, is still reeling in the wake of Justin Wilson’s death. By all accounts, he was well-loved by his peers and his fans in the sport, and even in death, he did a hell of a lot of good. But the IndyCar season’s not over yet, and the final race is in Sonoma, California, on Sunday.
On Thursday, a few race cars drove over the Golden Gate Bridge in what was initially meant to be a promotion for the race. But in the wake of the Wilson tragedy, they couldn’t really just smile and wave and pretend everything was okay, so they made the drive a tribute to Wilson, led by his Andretti Racing teammate Marco Andretti (pictured above), driving Wilson’s number 25 car:
According to FOX Sports, two safety vehicles drove with the IndyCars flying banners with Wilson’s helmet and “JWBADASS” drawn on them. In addition to the show of love, Honda announced a plan for donations to a fund set up for Wilson’s children, which will be increased for every lap Honda vehicles finish at Sonoma.
