The Oklahoma Sooners pulled out a thrilling victory in hostile territory on Saturday night, taking down Tennessee in Volunteer country with an overtime victory. As you’d imagine, the OU players were quite fired up to head home as victors following the Top 25 matchup, and some apparently made sure to rub it into the rowdy crowd of Vols supporters.
As the Sooners left the field, more than a few players taunted the student section right by the tunnel, making “I can’t hear you” gestures and dancing on their proverbial graves. Oklahoma safety Hatari Byrd apparently had enough of a distaste for the Tennessee fans that he decided to flip them the middle finger as he exited the field.
I’m sure this won’t sit well with a lot of people, and Byrd may even see discipline as a result. But you know what? I think all players should be allowed to flip off fans after big wins. The intensity runs high and if fans can dish out taunts, they should be able to take them right back. Just as long as you’re not flipping off small children who are innocent and adorable, this should be fair game.
Sports need more middle fingers, if you ask me.
