What Kind Of Drill Is Sammy Watkins Doing Here?

One of the toughest plays for a wide receiver, or any athlete, is catching a ball right over one’s head. That’s part of why Willie Mays is a legend, and it would be an incredible thing to master. You can’t fault Sammy Watkins for trying then, even if he, uh, still needs a little work. Football, after football, none of them caught by a very talented athlete. Sammy Watkins could beat all of us at pretty much everything, but sitting flat on your butt trying to guess-time the appearance of a football? That would be a hell of a bar bet (or at least a decent idea for a Jimmy Fallon game), and this video would only boost my confidence I had a shot.

Joe Buscaglia is right: It is mesmerizing just to watch the ball donk off Watkins’ hands over and over. It’s difficult to tell with the helmet on, but it looks like Sammy’s laughing through the whole thing. And how could he not, at such a dumb-looking drill? All you need to do to make this a Japanese game show is replace footballs with either scorpions or pictures of the contestant’s family. It’s that silly. Can this be a new addition to the (underrated) Pro Bowl Skills Challenge?
