Conor McGregor Refuses To Be Called The ‘Interim’ Champion

Conor McGregor is known as a fighter who talks the talk and walks the walk. But now he’s trying to weave a new reality with words; one where he is the real UFC featherweight champion instead of the interim champ.

McGregor was set to face reigning champion Jose Aldo for the 145-pound belt back in July, but Aldo was forced to pull out due to a rib injury. McGregor instead faced the next best fighter in the division, Chad Mendes, beating him in a barnburner of a fight. That earned him the interim featherweight title, but as far as Conor’s concerned, his belt is the only legit belt. Via The Daily Mail:

“F*ck that, what do you mean interim? Aldo and I had a date, he didn’t show, someone else took his place, I beat him, easy. So don’t give me interim.”

Unfortunately for Conor, that’s not how any of this works. But the guy carries his belt with such confidence that it’s easy to forget Jose Aldo is still in the picture at all. The media helps that perception by riding the McGregor hype train, and the UFC isn’t exactly spending a lot of time promoting Aldo, either:

Fortunately, the matter will get worked out on its own on December 12 when Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor finally fight at UFC 194. Unless Aldo gets injured again, in which case the UFC may make McGregor’s wish come true and upgrade his belt to undisputed. In the meantime, I’m sure he’ll go ahead and steal Aldo’s belt a few more times before fight night.
