Contrary to popular belief, the San Francisco 49ers roster is actually filled with professional football players, although you could certainly have been fooled on this play.
The Niners were trying to down a punt against Chicago inside the one-yard line but they let it squeak into the end zone. The Chicago returner didn’t touch the ball, but members of the San Francisco special teams unit apparently thought he did, as they tried desperately to grab the football that was just sitting there in the end zone.
Even though it wouldn’t have counted anyways, watching multiple 49ers’ trying and failing to fall on a ball that isn’t even moving, sums up their season pretty nicely.
