This Might Be The Most Gloriously Awful Free Kick In The History Of Soccer

There aren’t a whole lot of things better than watching athletes attempt something spectacular and somehow pull it off, but seeing athletes attempt something spectacular and fail miserably might actually be one them.

A soccer game in England’s fifth division contained a hilariously miserable free kick over the weekend, and it might be the most glorious sports highlight of 2016 so far. Given a set piece maybe a dozen or so yards outside the box, Cheltenham Town stacked five players behind the ball, hoping to confuse their opponents and bury the free kick in the back of the net.

What came next was nothing short of spectacular. In an elaborate display of trickery, three Cheltenham players faked an attempt on the ball consecutively. The fourth guy did not fake the shot — although he probably wishes he did, because he ended up booting it about 75 rows deep into the stands.

The dramatic build-up paired with an astoundingly terrible conclusion is the ultimate form of sports humor. God bless the fifth division’s excess of creativity and lack of skill. When you put them together, the result is pure magic.
