Seeing as he is a longtime Mets fan, and more recently a minority owner of the franchise, it’s understandable that Real Time host Bill Maher isn’t a fan of Washington Nationals star Bryce Harper. Not only are the Mets and Nationals divisional rivals, but Harper specifically has done pretty well against the Mets.

That, and he’s Bryce Harper. He flips bats when he hits home runs and doesn’t care about your grandfather’s game of stick ball.

“I’m not a big Bryce Harper fan,” Maher said on 710 WOR. “There’s a couple of words I really can’t say on public radio that I think apply to him. But next to those words in the dictionary, I see a picture of Bryce Harper. I really do. I just don’t like that guy at all.”

Maher continued, “He’s a douche. He’s a douchebag. He looks like a douchebag… When you’re that good, when you’re that young, you’re going to be a dick.”

But then Maher added the other relevant quote: “Of course if he was a Met, I’d love him.”

That speaks to Harper’s mainstream appeal. Yeah, he’s arrogant. Yeah, he fits the villain role perfectly. All of this, of course, makes him a refreshing change-of-pace in a sport that’s struggled to gain new fans over the years. But to get a few new fans, you’re going to have to make some enemies.
