A College Hockey Announcer Completely Lost His Mind On An Overtime Goal Call

Max Wolpoff really loves Boston University women’s hockey, so of course he’s gonna freak the hell out when the team’s captain scores an overtime winner. Lucky for us, he was calling the game on the Terriers’ broadcast so we can all enjoy it. Wolpoff lost his voice — and maybe his mind for a bit — when BU captain Natalie Flynn scored the game winner against the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday night.

Flynn potted her second of the game after a quick centering pass from Natasza Tarnowski, catching Wolpoff by surprise and unleashing a bonkers goal call that quickly made him internet famous. The right cadence is so important when calling a game, especially hockey. The rising and falling of a broadcaster’s voice can alert people following the game that something important might be happening. If you look at the transcript, though, Wolpoff goes 0-100 instantaneously.

Flynn and Tarnowski working with it… Tarnowski gets it behind the net Tarnowski (unintelligible) looking for Flynn—FLYNN SCORES! NATALIE FLYNN! NATALIE FLYNN! NATALIE FLYNN! GOOD MORNING, GOOD AFTERNOON, AND GOODNIGHT MINNESOTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NATALIE FLYNN THE CAPTAIN WITH A MULTI-GOAL GAME! I HAVE LOST MY VOICE WITH EXCITEMENT!!!!

If you want to see more of the kid’s calls, he’s got plenty of them on his Soundcloud account. Wolpoff clearly got a little lost in the moment, but he’s had a good sense of humor about it.

Here’s hoping the Boston University has a long run of dramatic overtime wins this season so we can get a few followup calls.
