A Chinese Diver Was Stunned By A Marriage Proposal After Winning A Silver Medal

Women’s 3-meter springboard diver He Zi has competed her hardest and will be leaving Rio with a silver medal for all her trouble. But then her boyfriend, fellow Chinese diver Qin Kai, dropped to one knee to propose following the medal ceremony and now she’ll also be heading home with an engagement ring!

Fellow China teammate Shi Tingmao won gold in the 3-meter women’s springboard, with Zi completing the Chinese 1-2 finish ahead of Tania Cagnotto. Like a good boyfriend, Kai waited until after the medal ceremony to avoid stepping all over her girlfriend’s once-in-a-lifetime moment with his own. Way to be patient, man! (It probably also helped that he won a bronze in the 3-meter on the men’s side, so he would know how important the medal ceremony is to an athlete!)

Most people seem to think proposals at sporting events are lame, but I think that really only applies to proposals in the stands. Athlete proposals on the field of play are AWESOME. Right, Ian Johnson?

The best thing about proposing at the Olympics is that you’ll have plenty of professional photographers around to snap the engagement shots. Luckily for the two, the pool behind them is finally the right color! Congratulations to Zi and Kai, this has quickly become even more of the trip of a lifetime than it was before.
