Uruguay’s Soccer Team Was Stunned When The Wrong National Anthem Played At Copa America

Uruguay was beaten 3-1 by Mexico on Sunday night in a Copa America group stage game, but you can’t exactly blame them as they may have been a bit distracted.

You see, in international soccer matches, it’s tradition to play the national anthems of the two nations represented before the match gets underway. Unfortunately for Uruguay, that tradition didn’t exactly go as planned ahead of their match in Phoenix, as the wrong national anthem was played when it was time to honor the South American nation.

Instead of the song of Uruguay, it was the national anthem of Chile that was played over the loud speaker. Even though the players and fans immediately knew something was up, they had very little choice but to stand there awkwardly and wait for the song to play out.

It’s obviously an embarrassing situation not only for the players, but for Copa America and University of Phoenix Stadium, and Copa America released this statement regarding the incident blaming a “human error” for the screwup.

This is unfortunately not the first time that something like that has occurred, as FedEx Field played the anthem of the Isle of Man instead of El Salvador’s before a match last year.
