You know that feeling when you wake up after a night of partying and come to the horrible realization that you’ve stupidly lost something, such as your phone, keys, or wallet? Well, imagine that missing item is the gold medal that you’ve been working so tirelessly for over the past year or so.

That was the terrifying reality for Polish hammer thrower Pawel Fajdek, who won gold at the World Championships in Beijing over the weekend. Understandably, the 26-year-old decided to hit the city on Sunday night to celebrate his victory and, understandably, he reportedly got a little carried away with his drinking.

Unfortunately, Fajdek woke up on Monday morning (with what we can only assume was a monstrous hangover) and remembered that he used the gold medal he’d just won to pay his cab fare home, making one Chinese taxi driver a lucky son-of-a-gun for a brief amount of time. Fajdek contacted the police, who were able to help him piece together his night, track down the driver and get his medal back.

If only all our drunk disaster stories had such a fortunate ending as this one.
