How Much Is Derek Jeter Worth?

The impasse between the New York Yankees and Derek Jeter lingers on as the team and their shortstop try to work out a new deal for the perennial All-Star. It’s the same old story of a rich, billion-dollar empire trying to get rid of its most famous employee without looking too prickish about it.

The Yankees have already been way too nice to Jeter. Their first offer, the one that Jeter and Close appeared to be so confused by, the reported three-year, $45 million proposal, was insane for the exact opposite reasons that Jeter and Close thought it was insane: It’s way, way too much. You can make an argument that, honestly, the Yankees shouldn’t sign him at all. But given a dispassionate assessment of his market value, I’d offer him one year, $5 million … tops.

I really have no idea what Jeter is actually worth, but if he doesn’t sign with the Yankees, five million per might be the best he can do. He’s a 36-year-old shortstop with narrowing range and probably not even the best player on his half of the infield. Still, how weird would it be to see Derek Jeter get his 3,000th career hit wearing some other team’s uniform? That reminds me of the time that I dressed for work in drag and got a raise, and then they found out I couldn’t type. I never said it was a great story.
