ICYMI: The Phillie Phanatic Parodied Nirvana’s Nevermind

I have no idea how I missed this, but SPIN Magazine wrote up a short piece about Friday night’s ‘TOTAL 1990s Retro Night’ at the Philadelphia Phillies’ Citizens Bank Park and shared a photoshop of The Phillie Phanatic subbing in for a naked little boy on the cover of Nirvana’s 1991 record Nevermind. Let that sink in for a second.

Sure, MLB is no stranger to photoshopping baseball types into period costume for theme nights. Hell, just last month I went to “Disco Night” at Tropicana Field and saw Roberto Hernandez photoshopped to look like Austin Powers. It works if you imagine it’s Austin Powers from the sequels. But no, nothing I’ve seen has matched the absurdist glory of a naked Phillie Phanatic swimming after a baseball to pay tribute to an album which, I feel like I should remind you, features song titles like ‘Territorial Pissings.’

Here’s the complete graphic, with the biggest-ever hat-tip to SPIN:

I’m going to spend the rest of the day trying to come up with mascot Nirvana album covers. Do an Atlanta Braves one and call it Braves Bleach Creature. Maybe put some wings and guts on Lou Seal and call it In Scutaro.
