Sunday night’s showdown between the Steelers and Jaguars at Alltel Stadium produced plenty of work for local police, as three separate incidents produced four arrests and sent five people to the hospital. The highlights:
- A brawl broke out on the upper deck, and one fan was violently shoved into a piece of glass paneling, knocking a 40-pound piece of temper glass onto fans in the stands below. Three people needed hospitalization. SMG general manager Bob Downey: “Obviously a very unfortunate thing happened.”
- After the game, three security guards were needed to subdue one man who was just walking down the ramp, randomly punching people. As long as those people were wearing Steelers jerseys, that’s fine with me.
- Ten minutes later, two men were stabbed. Yes, stabbed. The instigator, Jason Green, first went after a man walking with his family, then stabbed another man who tried to call for help. Green was then Tased by security guards.
Whoa, this is surprising. Before this, I had only heard nice things about what a sophisticated city Jacksonville is, and how mild-mannered Steelers and Jaguars fans are. Now, gosh, I don’t know what to think.
