Florida Head Coach Jim McElwain Went Ballistic At One Of His Players Over A Taunting Penalty

Jim McElwain took over for Will Muschamp as head coach of the Florida Gators this season, and by the looks of it, he’s already establishing himself as a no-nonsense type of coach. (That’s a nice way of saying he can get really mean.) This is him unloading on running back Kelvin Taylor after Taylor was penalized for making a throat-slashing gesture at East Carolina as the Gators were pulling away. He wasn’t done either:

Taunting penalties are always especially galling for a coach, since they’re never a question of an honest mistake on the field. Coaches like to talk about being leaders of men and instilling their players with senses of discipline and maturity, and they never like to see that they’ve failed in that respect. And even beyond the normal level of stupidity required to make a throat-slashing gesture in full view of officials, it wasn’t Georgia or Alabama that Florida was putting away. It was East Carolina. No one is impresssed with you, Gators. Also, the game wasn’t over, so slow your roll. (The Gators wound up holding on, 31-24.)

Still though, Jim McElwain was very mean to a very young man in front of all of his friends. That’s not very mature of him either.
