Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson got the scare of his life on Thursday night when he took a line drive shot directly to his head on the mound. In the third inning of the Brewers game against the Cardinals in Milwaukee, outfielder Tommy Pham hit a screaming liner right back at Nelson, who was hit on the side of the head above the ear before dropping to the dirt.

After play concluded and the ball was ruled dead, Brewers medical staff immediately ran out onto the field to assist Nelson as he remained down on the infield. Everyone in attendance – including players, fans, coaches, and broadcasters – waited with bated breath as team doctors tended to the pitcher. Pham and several other players were visibly shaken after witnessing the ball violently (and loudly) connect with Nelson’s skull. We’ve seen it happen more than a few times in the past, and usually it doesn’t end well.

Fortunately, Nelson picked himself up rather quickly and was able to walk off the field under his own power, but not before seemingly pleading his case to stay in the game. Of course, that was never going to happen and the pitcher was instead brought to a nearby hospital to evaluate the damage. The diagnosis was pretty miraculous.

It’s hard to fathom that a scene that frightening could culminate in only a bruise, but apparently Nelson has some kind of luck.
