The Dolphins Have Fired Joe Philbin, Adding Him To The Long List Of Ex-Dolphins Head Coaches

After an uninspired effort in London against the Jets on Sunday, the Miami Dolphins, who many predicted would be a playoff team this season, have fallen to just 1-3 on the season. Many were wondering if head coach Joe Philbin would make it through the Dolphins bye week, and now we have our answer, according to the Sun Sentinel:

The ‘Fins signed Ndomukong Suh in the offseason and thought that his addition to aid an already solid front-seven would result in a dominant defense. Instead, the Dolphins have the league’s 30th ranked defense and have recorded only one total sack in four games. On the offensive end, quarterback Ryan Tannehill hasn’t done much either after his big contract extension, and only Jacksonville and San Francisco are averaging less points per-game than Miami.

Philbin, who said Sunday he wasn’t worried about his job, has gone 7-9, 8-8, and 8-8 in his three full seasons as Dolphins’ coach, never bringing them to the postseason. Tight ends coach Dan Campbell, who has never served as a head coach will take over on an interim basis, and become the teams’ eighth head coach since 2000.

Philbin is just one in another long line of Dolphins’ head coaches that have failed to get the job done since the team employed Jimmy Johnson in the late ’90s.

The Dolphins won the AFC East once under Dave Wannstedt and Tony Sparano, but both of them eventually fell totally out of favor and were run out of Miami. In between, there was the likes of Nick Saban who famously ditched the Dolphins for Alabama, and Cam Cameron who spent his only season in Miami going 1-15.

To make matters worse on Philbin, the Dolphins could have hired Todd Bowles who served as their interim coach after Sparano was let go. Although it’s a small sample size, Bowles sure looks like he is going to be an effective NFL head coach going 3-1 in his first four games as coach of the Dolphins’ division rival the New York Jets.

Heat season is right around the corner, Miami sports fans.
