This Minnesota Player’s Emotional Post-Win Interview Is Why People Love College Sports

Minnesota went into Thursday night’s game with No. 6 Maryland with an 0-13 record in the Big Ten and 6-19 mark overall. The Golden Gophers left the game with a 68-63 victory, and senior forward Joey King became overwhelmed with emotion.

King had 15 points and hit two crucial free throws to seal the upset, then barely kept it together during a postgame interview with Big Ten Network.

“There’s not too many fans that would come out day in and day out for an 0-13 team. To have the kind of support we have here is something really special. We haven’t had the best year but we kept fighting. We knew we’d show up one of these nights. To have it against Maryland, one of the top teams in the country, in front of our home crowd, it’s something they deserve. They stuck with us all year.”

This is the part where I make jokes about a guy crying about a win that puts the Gophers 12 wins short of the NIT, but a) that was nice to hear King talk about how he knows the work they put in this year will pay off for the younger players next year after he’s gone and b) I went to Rutgers, which is 0-13 in the Big Ten and galactically bad at basketball. I cry when Rutgers beats FDU, so let’s allow King and the Gophers to have this moment.
