Iowa State Football Players Became Spring Break Heroes After Saving A Woman From Drowning

While most college-aged people are partying during spring break, several members of the Iowa State football team were busy saving a woman’s life.

Well, they were definitely partying at South Padre Island in Texas, but they also made time for life saving.

According to the Des Moines Register, 22-year-old Luisa Maria Castro crashed her car into Laguna Madre Bay and began to sink. Current Iowa State players Jack Spreen, Josh Jahlas, Anthony Lazard and Spencer Benton along with former players Matt Sawyer and Joe Doran rushed to the scene to pull her out of the vehicle.

It wasn’t as simple as unfastening her seat belt and pulling her out.

Lazard, Spreen and Doran took off to help. The three jumped into the canal and swam over to the car. Soon they got to Castro, who was trapped in her car and trying to get free.

The three fought to break her loose, punching at the vehicle’s front window. She kicked at it. Nothing seemed to work.

“I was getting worried that we were going to watch this girl drown to death, because no matter how hard we were hitting it, it wasn’t cracking or spidering for a while,” Lazard said.

They eventually were able to make a small hole in the windshield that allowed them to create a bigger one and pulled her to safety.

Today is April 1, so hopefully this story is true because it’s nice. If it turns out this never happened or the true story is a 22-year-old woman fell asleep in a shallow kid’s pool and these guys “saved” her from that, I’m quitting the day and returning April 2.
