A Notre Dame Player Broke Down After His Brother Surprised Him With An Early Return From Afghanistan

Notre Dame guard Matt Farrell scored 13 points during Monday night’s game against Colgate, which is no doubt a respectable performance. But what happened on the court after the win is something he’ll never forget.

Farrell was the focal point of a special presentation on the floor after Notre Dame’s 77-62 win at home on Monday night. The Fighting Irish played a video of Farrell’s older brother, Bo, on the video board above the court. Bo was stationed in Afghanistan and scheduled to return home in February. With an American flag in the background, Bo congratulated the Irish on the win, said hi to his parents, and wished everyone a Merry Christmas.

“For us, home is wherever we’re together,” Bo said. “And I look forward to being home with you soon. Really, really soon.”

Bo Farrell cracked a smile as the camera panned out to reveal he wasn’t in Afghanistan, but in South Bend, Indiana. He then ran out to greet his brother on the court while the Joyce Center crowd went wild.

The moment is so touching the two even botched a bro hand slap/hug and no one seemed to notice.

Matt and Bo’s parents, who also didn’t know Bo would be returning home early, later joined the brothers on the court to share an emotional holiday moment the family won’t ever forget. The idea apparently came from Matt and Bo’s grandma, which is an awesome detail.

Nice job, grandma. You’re definitely off the hook on getting anyone Christmas gifts for a while now. That’s great work.
