Nevada Won’t Punish Nate Diaz For Smoking A Weed Vape Pen After The Conor McGregor Fight

The Diaz Brothers are probably the biggest potheads in the UFC, or at least the most open about their weed usage. Nick Diaz has been suspended three times for having illegal levels of cannabinoids in his fight night drug tests, and Nate went ahead and toked on a marijuana vape pen at the UFC 202 post-event press conference. To say the two aren’t exactly careful about toeing the regulatory line when it comes to weed would be an understatement.

Fortunately, it looks like Nate waited until after the Nevada State Athletic Commission did a final drug test on him before busting out his vape: both McGregor and Diaz’s UFC 202 drug tests came back clean. And as far as Nevada is concerned, that’s all they cared about.

USADA does things by the book, so there’s still a chance Nate could get in trouble for ‘admitting use’ during the six hour period after his fight that USADA technically considers ‘in-competition.’ The fact that Diaz was smoking a CBD cannabidiol associated with pain relief and anti-inflammatory properties rather than the more common trippy THC variety doesn’t help him out. Unfortunately, USADA tests don’t distinguish between different kinds of cannabinoids.

But on the plus side, USADA recently raised the allowable amount of cannabinoids that can show up in an athlete’s system in an effort to avoid fighters failing drug tests over a joint smoked a week before a bout. That means admitting use isn’t enough to prove Diaz violated the rules. In theory, USADA would need a test to prove he went over the allowed cannabinoid limit, and they didn’t get one from Nate following the press conference.

So it seems like Nate is in the clear and won’t end up sitting out six months to a year because of this ridiculous incident. Why he even took the obvious risk in front of a room full of reporters isn’t exactly clear. Diaz brothers gonna Diaz, and that’s all there is to it.
