Perhaps the biggest obstacle to our Kobe-LeBron “dream” matchup in the NBA Finals is the Denver Nuggets The Nuggets are a team that, after trading Allen Iverson earlier in the regular season (that was this year, right?), have quietly beaten up the teams in front of them with rebounding and transitional offense. They certainly have the talent–In addition to frontman Carmelo Anthony, they have Chauncey Billups and Kenyon Martin, which is kinda mind-blowing if you’re like me and you haven’t been watching the NBA regularly. Anyway, they’re pounding the Mavericks in their conference semis, taking a 2-0 lead with their win last night.
Denver’s getting help from their lesser-known players as well. Painted Caucasian Chris Andersen, who leads the team in blocked shots, could be our generation’s Larry Bird With Tattoos (you know, as opposed to the Mavs’ Dirk Nowitzki, who is our generation’s Larry Bird With Autism. So these conference finals matchups (presuming Cleveland and Boston take care of business) could be worth watching. Because the Nuggets could ruin everything, in which case you’ll be watching them play in the NBA Finals anyway.
