Aaron Rodgers Claims That Randall Cobb Being Mic’d Up Led To His Punctured Lung

It may seem like an eternity ago, but the Green Bay Packers’ loss to the Arizona Cardinals in the Divisional Round was an absolutely wild affair with a Hail Mary and overtime. Lost amidst our memory of the chaos, however, was that star Packers receiver Randall Cobb left the field with an injury late in the game. According to Aaron Rodgers, it was a more serious condition than any fan was aware of at the time — and he knows why it happened.

Speaking with his former teammate A.J. Hawk on his Hawkcast podcast, Rodgers said that Cobb punctured his lung, and pointed the finger at the mic pack the wideout was wearing for NFL Films’ “Mic’d Up” segments.

“Randall Cobb had a serious injury last year in a playoff game and I believe, as I think he would as well and the team, that that was caused from him being mic’d up,” Rodgers said. “Because he fell on his mic pack and he had an injury to his insides that kept him out of the game and probably would have kept him out of the rest of the playoffs. The puncture spot, or the injury spot, was directly adjacent to his mic pack.”

A punctured lung is a scary injury, and any implication that it was at least partially caused by a piece of non-football equipment immediately has to call into question whether they should be allowed. Those “Mic’d Up” segments are popular, but if the NFL is truly concerned about player safety like Roger Goodell insists it is, mic packs like the one Cobb wore should be banned immediately. Otherwise, it’s yet another piece to throw onto the mountain of evidence that the NFL only cares about looking like they care.
