Richard Sherman Had Some Harsh Words For Roger Goodell After His Proposed Rule Changes

Richard Sherman is not exactly one to bite his tongue when it comes to criticizing the NFL. The Pro-Bowl cornerback has taken aim previously at NFL officiating, as well as the league’s insistence of Thursday Night Football being a thing. Now, Sherman is back at it and, this time, he has some harsh words for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

In February, Goodell proposed a rule change that would mandate an automatic ejection if a player received two personal foul penalties in the same game. Unsurprisingly, considering how inconsistent the officiating has been in the league the last few seasons, Sherman isn’t exactly a huge fan of that proposal, and he took Goodell to task on it during a recent SportsCenter interview with ESPN’s Jim Trotter.

“I think it’s foolish,” he said. “But it sounds like something somebody who’s never played the game would say, something that they would suggest, because he doesn’t understand. He’s just a face. He’s just a suit. He’s never stepped foot on the field and understood how you can get a personal foul.”

Yeah, you can’t really get more pointed than that.  The thing is, Sherman isn’t just some random player saying these things about the commissioner. In addition to being one of the game’s biggest stars, Sherman also happens to be a member of the NFLPA executive committee. It will be interesting to see what response, if any, the league has for Sherman’s remarks and whether they think it was out of bounds.

In addition to his comments about Goodell’s personal foul rule, Sherman also isn’t a big fan of the current catch or not a catch fiasco that rears its ugly, confusing head every Sunday during the season. Although the league has recently decided they won’t further tinker with the rule, Sherman says they would benefit from having Hall Of Fame wideouts try and come up with a clearer definition.

“Because you’ve got a bunch of suits doing it,” Sherman said. “Like I said before, you don’t have a bunch of guys … let Jerry Rice and Michael Irvin talk about it for about 20, 30 minutes. Maybe Cris Carter. Randy Moss, let those guys have a roundtable discussion about what a catch should be and come up with a rule.

I guarantee you it’d be more effective than the rule they have now because those are the pass-catchers. Those are some of the best pass-catchers we’ve had. I think it’d be more straightforward and to the point. You’ve got a bunch of guys who have never played. They’ve probably touched a football to hold it out or to shake somebody’s hand, to take a picture, but they’ve never played the game.”

Are we sure that Richard Sherman can’t just be a player-commissioner for the rest of his career?
