Hey, remember the '90s? Bill Clinton was president, globalization was all the rage with the end of the Cold War, our nation fell in love with the dulcet sounds of the Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys, and people just couldn't get enough grunge music or AIDS. Oh, and all the hot genocide was going down in the Balkans.
Well, guess what? The '90s are back! In the form of Serbian-Croat violence!
Croatian and Serbian spectators kicked each other and used flag poles as weapons during brief scuffles Monday at the Australian Open tennis championship. Police and private security guards at the year’s first Grand Slam event ejected 150 people from the Melbourne Park venue after the violence.
Uh oh. Not tennis hooligans. Those people will split your head open for politely clapping after a Martina Hingis rally. I yelled "Take it off!" to Maria Sharapova at the U.S. Open and got a flare thrown at me. Well, it wasn't so much a flare as a dirty look from an older woman in sunglasses. But still, she looked tough and I didn't want to fuck with her.
