The Mountain From ‘Game Of Thrones’ Says He Was Taking It Easy On Conor McGregor

There’s a little bit of a disagreement between Conor McGregor and Hafthor Julius Bjornsson, aka The Mountain from Game of Thrones, over who won an impromptu semi-friendly sparring match in October. As far as McGregor was concerned, “I sunk him good. Not even a Mountain can take these shots from me!” Unsurprisingly, Bjornsson has a different view of the situation. Via a great interview on the Icelandic strongman from GQ:

You know, Conor McGregor is in this package, too. I saw you guys had a little sparring session. He landed a few punches.
He was trying to punch me. I didn’t feel anything. [laughs]

Who do you think won the fight?
He believes he won it. He does not know that I was taking it easy on him because he has a fight and I didn’t want to break him before the fight. He’s worked too much, so I didn’t want to break him.

It was nice of The Mountain to not smash Conor McGregor a month ahead of his big title fight with Jose Aldo … a fight McGregor ended up winning with one punch in a record-breaking 13 seconds. Injuries happen in mixed martial arts often enough — just this week an entire UFC pay-per-view was nuked on account of them. The last thing the UFC needs is one of their biggest stars getting his skull crushed by The Mountain.

Had a good day today with these champs @gunninelson & @thenotoriousmma !
