Brandon Jennings Nixed From Team USA Because of Nike?

Milwaukee Bucks point guard Brandon Jennings is still less than pleased about being cut from the US national team earlier this summer. Jennings, who has a deal with Under Armor, believes that Nike’s sponsorship of Team USA may be the root of his dismissal. He could believe that they already had too many guards on roster, and adding another point guard would make the team too undersized, but that would just be silly.

Jennings, who wears Under Armour, told Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports that “it’s not my call. That’s on them. But if you want to get technical about it and you really want to look at it, half of the guys there are Nike guys. I’m not saying it’s a Nike thing, but Nike is kind of running a lot of things right now. To have a guy like myself on the USA team that’s flashy and really outgoing, you don’t want Under Armour to get all that (publicity).” –Game On

I can see where Jennings has a right to be flustered. He does happen to be an experienced international player, but I don’t believe him getting cut is a result of his Under Armor sponsorship. Even if he had played in Turkey while wearing Under Armor shoes, every other part of his body would be covered in Nike logos. Not to mention that Chauncey Billups, Derek Rose, and Dwight Howard all have deals with Adidas.

Either way, the US was able to overcome the smell of Istanbul to beat Turkey this weekend, taking the gold in the FIBA World Basketball Championships. By winning, Team USA is automatic qualifier for the 2012 Olympics in London. Kevin Durant went into beast mode, dropping 28 on the Hedo Turkoglu led Turks, while LeBron sipped margaritas with BangBros rejects on South Beach. Highlights after the jump.
