Would You Give Up Your Sense Of Smell For Modern Technology?

By / 05.26.11

A new study on young people by the McCann Worldgroup reveals something not surprising at all to anyone who knows anything about young people: The majority of them would rather give up use of a fundamental human sense than have to give up the amazing technology available to all of us fortunate enough to be living in this era.

The study involved 7,000 16-30 year-olds from across the world and, perhaps more than anything, revealed that the younger generation evolving today dreads feeling isolated and uninformed.

Reports Biz Report:

“(Technology) is the glue that binds this generation together and fuels the motivations that define them.” said Laura Simpson, Global IQ Director for McCann Worldgroup.

Who they connect to, and even which brands they “Like”, plays a more important role in their “Social Economy” than what they own or the experiences they’ve had.

So important is technology to today’s youth that over half (53%) would give up their sense of smell rather than lose access to it. To them, losing the ability to explore and communicate via technology would be like a blind man losing his stick.

I don’t know about all that, but I’d totally be willing to give up my olfactory senses to be able to play Tetris like this guy…
