Gays Want AT&T To Purchase T-Mobile?

By / 06.16.11

You would think that AT&T is not very popular, what with the fact that even professional journalists boo it whenever they get a chance. But, apparently, AT&T, or at least their desire to “merge” with T-Mobile (realistically, it’s how you and I “merge” with a sandwich), is backed by…environmentalists, Latinos, and the gays.

CNET did some digging into the letters of support and found some surprising “yes” votes: GLAAD, the NAACP, and the Sierra Club, for example.

Why do they even care in the first place? Supposedly because it will speed up high-speed Internet access across the country, since AT&T found buying a competitor a cheaper solution than upgrading their crappy network. But the real answer, of course, is politics. AT&T is fairly heavily unionized, and it makes pretty big donations to these groups. Furthermore, as pretty much everybody hates them, they need all the support they can get, and civil-rights groups approving of their merger looks good.

Or maybe gay people enjoy having their calls dropped?
