Apple Looking To Knock Google Maps Off Its Pedestal

Or, if you prefer, iOS on Android: “They don’t love you like I love you.” OK, stopping now.

In its ongoing crusade to put that whippersnapper Google in its place, Apple has been going on a map patent binge. They own a 3D mapping company, a company that ties geographic data to other data, and just a straight-up map company. You want maps? They got maps. They got lots of maps.

In other words, Apple wants to offer you fancy, detailed 3D maps on your Apple products that tell you exactly where your friends are, and Google Maps can just go away, thanks. Which to us raises the question of whether they entirely realize that most people find 3D mapping stuff to be neat, but when it comes to getting directions, they just want a flat map with a Street View option. Also that if non-Apple users can’t use it, it’s probably not going to displace Google. Just saying, guys, a closed ecosystem has its downsides.
