You might remember that Justin Carter, a Texas teenager, was arrested for making tasteless jokes on Facebook. In addition to, among other things, being thrown naked in solitary confinement for his own protection, Justin had his bail set at $500,000, five times the bail set for those accused of murder in Texas. It looked like he was going to be stuck in prison for a long, long time.

Fortunately, that’s not the case. Justin is now free, but there’s a heartwarming twist: MSNBC is reporting that Justin met bail thanks to somebody he doesn’t know.

Justin Carter’s attorney has confirmed that Carter is out on bail as of Thursday, July 11. An “anonymous good Samaritan” donated $500,000 to the Carter family so they could make bail for Justin, said defense attorney Don Flanary.

So what’s the next step? Carter obviously will need some time to deal with what he’s been put through, and then, of course, comes the inevitable attempt on the part of the people who did this to justify their behavior. Especially since, if they just drop the charges, that will leave them open to an enormous lawsuit. They’ll likely offer Carter something along the lines of an Alford plea, where basically they drop the charges because he says they were, like, totally right to throw him in jail because they don’t understand sarcasm.

But all that comes later. For now, we just want to wish Carter and his family the best… and hopefully that all this will be over.
