Coming to NBC: Chelsea Handler’s Sex Life, ‘Sex and the City’ for Old Men

By 11.03.10

NBC has picked up pitches for two new shows, and they are going to suck like few things have sucked before. Or maybe that’s too harsh. They will suck like “Outsourced.”

Chelsea Handler is making a move in primetime with a comedy project based on her books, which landed at NBC with a put pilot commitment. The project titled after one of Handler’s books, Are You There Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea, is described as an autobiographical multi-camera comedy based on Handler’s life in her twenties. [Deadline]

The book is about Handler getting drunk and screwing lots of dudes, which means that it would be a pretty great show on HBO or Showtime. A multi-camera sitcom on network TV? Written by the “Dharma & Greg” creators? Get ready for watered-down, predictable jokes.

Even worse, NBC has bought a spec script for an hour-long show from “Sex and the City” showrunner Michael Patrick King:

The show is said to be in the vein of the 1975 feature Shampoo that starred Warren Beatty. It centers on a straight Beverly Hills hairdresser in his 50s who is struggling to stay young and relevant in a place where looks are everything. The show explores men’s struggle with aging just like Sex and the City did with women’s fears of getting old. [Deadline]

Wow, so it’s “Men of a Certain Age” meets Hairspray, from the guy who brought you “Sex and the City.” Does anyone have a baby handy? I’d really like to punch a baby right now.
