Community Probably Can’t Do A “Back To The Future” Episode

The new season of Community starts production this week, and the cast and crew have been keeping the details pretty well under wraps.  So far we only know that Michael K. Williams and John Goodman will be guest stars at some point, and Gillian Jacobs has said there will be “a big reveal” for Britta this season, prompting us to stare at this .gif for two hours while hoping for a very special episode about bisexuality. (Emmy material?  Absolutely.)

CinemaBlend spoke to Donald Glover and Gillian Jacobs recently about storylines they’d like to cover on the show.  Glover mentioned the Back to the Future parody he’s been pitching to the writers for awhile, but also explained why it’ll probably never happen:

Glover: It’s really hard to do. Time travel is already hard.

Jacobs: We can’t actually break the laws of physics.

Glover: We’ve never had actual magic on the show. Time travel is tricky. It would have to be some sort of, like, mistake. But a mistake big enough that it can sustain a whole episode, but also small enough that it doesn’t f-ck up the rest of the world. So it’s hard. I had an idea, but it’s not well-formed.

It’s true that they’ve never broken the laws of physics on the show, unless you count the gravity-defying feats of Alison Brie running.  When the writers wanted to do a zombie episode, they had a tainted meat product cause an outbreak, and, when they wanted to do an episode in space, they kept it based squarely in reality by having the cast happen upon a “Kentucky Fried Chicken space simulator” (which needs to be installed in every KFC immediately).  If they can find a way to work a Back to the Future premise into the show, we’re just hoping Abed (Danny Pudi) is seen in the background of several scenes silently arguing with Thomas F. Wilson until finally laying him out with one punch.  The rest of the episode should just be Alison Brie running.
