‘Glee’ Students Will Actually Graduate, Leave Show

By / 07.15.11

This news came out yesterday, but I didn’t want to write about it at the time because Warming Glow was on an awesome streak of tits and bros and face-punching, and I didn’t want to gay up the page with “Glee” news. But three of the show’s main actors — Lea Michele (pictured), Cory Monteith (the quarterback), and Chris Colfer (the gay one) — will leave the show next season when their characters graduate.

Colfer, Michele and Monteith are not going to be back at all for Season 4. [Showrunner Ryan] Murphy tells THR: “You can keep them on the show for six years and people will criticize you for not being realistic, or you can be really true to life and say when they started the show they were very clearly sophomores and they should graduate at the end of their senior year.”

Murphy added that planning for the future beyond high school will be a heavy theme during Season 3, noting that “more characters are leaving than are staying” when graduation time comes at the season’s end.

I’ve definitely taken my shots at “Glee” in the past, but I have to applaud this move. One of my least favorite aspects of shows about high school are the various bullsht ways students end up hanging around the same environment — everyone decides to go to the same college together, or the really smart student ends up going to the community college across the street, or a girl gets bitten by her vampire boyfriend so she can stay a senior forever. F that noise.
