Last night, VH1 aired part-one of their 40 Greatest R&B Songs of the ’90s series. SPOILER ALERT: the top-five (in ascending order) are R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly”; Janet Jackson’s “That’s The Way Love Goes”; Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You”; Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day”; and Bell Biv Devoe’s “Poison.” That’s a pretty good list, but with all due respect to Turk, “Poison” doesn’t deserve to be #1. It’s a great song — and my life would be sadder without this GIF — but c’mon, Aaliyah’s “Are You That Somebody?” is the BEST R&B song of the 1990s. Dr. Dolittle soundtrack 4 life. Even if you don’t agree, which means you’re basically spitting in the face of that adorable cooing baby, you can at least acknowledge that “Motownphilly” should be higher than #36.
