Stand Back Everyone: Bill O’Reilly Just Made A Thoughtful Argument For Marriage Equality

It’s shaping up to be an important time in American history. The Supreme Court is listening to arguments today about the Constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), half the people on your Facebook walls are displaying marriage equality flags in on their profiles, and even Lord Renly has come out in support of marriage equality in what has to be my favorite image of the day. But you know sh*t just got real when Bill O’Reilly is coming out on the side of proponents of marriage equality. In an interview with Megyn Kelly over on Fox News, Bill O’Reilly had this to say about the debate over marriage equality.

And I agree with you 100-percent. A 100-percent! … I agree with you a 100-percent. The compelling argument is on the side of homosexuals. That’s where the compelling argument is. ‘We’re Americans, we just want to be treated like everybody else.’

That’s a compelling argument. And to deny that, you’ve got to have a very strong argument on the other side. And the other side hasn’t been able to do anything but thump the Bible.

Bill O’Reilly said that. Those words came out of his mouth. In fact, he also came out in support of civil unions and then said that he doesn’t feel strongly one way or another about gay marriage. “New York has it now. I live in New York, New York has it, I’m fine with it. I want all Americans to be happy, I do.”

I don’t want to overvalue the importance of this, but THIS IS HUGE. If you, like me, have crazy conservative grandparents or in-laws who live in Florida and parrot Bill O’Reilly and Fox News talking points (which you know are talking points because you heard the exact same lines being mocked on The Daily Show the night before), this could represent a huge shift in the conservative community.

But again, the important thing to take away from this post is this image, because y’all, it is awesome.
