What The Hell Is FX’s Mysterious New Series, ‘The Bridge,’ About Anyway?

If you watch a lot of FX — and that means Justified and Archer of late — you’ve undoubtedly seen promo clips for a summer series called The Bridge. They’re mysterious 10-second snippets. So far, those clips include 1) a man following two women into a bar, 2) someone driving up to a dilapidated mobile home; 3) a high-heel abandoned in a stream; and 4) someone backing their car away from a set of graves.

If you’ve somehow missed them, you can watch all four clips below, and then wonder what the hell(?) right along with the rest of us. So, what is the show about?

I think we mentioned the show way back after FX ordered it. It’s about two detectives, one from the USA and one from Mexico, who must work together to hunt down a serial killer operating on both sides of the American-Mexican border. So, it’s The Killing with a serial killer and a more diverse cast?

It actually has a decent cast: Joshua Jackson’s wife, Diane Kruger (also known as THE NEXT BIG THING OF 2004), Demián Bichir (Nancy’s drug-lord husband in Weeds), Ted Levine (Monk) and Annabeth Gish (Ben Wyatt’s sister in last week’s Parks and Recreation) star in the series. Like The Killing, it too is a remake of a Scandanavian crime drama, one so popular that there’s also a version being remade between Britain and France called The Tunnel. It was ten episodes, and guess what? The serial killer case was solved at the end of the first season, so if The Bridge fails on that front, then we know that FX has botched another great import like AMC did with The Killing. Here’s a synopsis:

Demián Bichir stars in the role of “Marco Ruiz,” a homicide investigator for the state of Chihuahua, Mexico living in Ciudad Juárez. A family man, Marco is one of the last good men in a corrupt and apathetic police force that is outgunned by the powerful drug cartels. He’s sharp, charming, and observant and painfully aware that his city is in a state of chaos. When a body is dumped on the bridge that spans the El Paso-Ciudad Juárez border, Ruiz is forced to work with his American counterpart, Detective Sonya Cross (Diane Kruger).

Finally, here’s a very well made fan trailer of the Scandinavian series.

The Bridge debuts in July.
